Well, the Kaipara region has endured yet another bad drought. Although not as widespread as in 2013, in some areas – South Kaipara included – the drought has been just as bad if not worse than what we experienced last year.
I believe from Dargaville down to South Head was the worst hit. In some parts of Dargaville stock were trying to feed off dirt and one dairy farmer I spoke too had spent nearly $100,000 per month feeding stock on silage and hay.
Thankfully the rain has now come and the grass is growing again. I just hope the cold weather doesn’t come too early so as to inhibit a good start into winter.
