Congratulations to Joe Babich from Babich Wines, who was recognised in the New Year’s Honours when he was awarded an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the New Zealand wine industry.  Next year Babich Wines will celebrate its 100th year, making it New Zealand’s second oldest label.  Joe’s father Josip planted his first vineyard on a terrace above the Kaikino Swamp gum field back in 1912, and in 1916 made his first New Zealand wine for sale in cask and bottle under the name ‘Babich Brothers’.  Today the business is run by Joe, his brother Peter and nephew David.
