A convention has now come into effect which affords the Inland Revenue Department with more power to pursue tax evaders who leave New Zealand.  The ‘Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters’ officially enables co-operation between international tax authorities concerning the assessment and collection of taxes.  The IRD will now be able to request assistance from other countries’ tax authorities who have also signed the convention in order to collect outstanding tax debts from any tax payers who have moved overseas.
