Connecting globally in Sydney

Community

In October 2025, our entire UHY Haines Norton Auckland team headed to Sydney for the UHY International Annual Conference at the InterContinental. It was an incredible opportunity to connect with member firms from across the globe, share insights, and strengthen the network’s commitment to excellence in accounting and advisory services.

All six of our directors attended, along with their spouses, which is a real reflection of our firm’s family-driven culture of inclusion and support. Over the three days we spent there, we participated in technical sessions, strategic discussions, and experienced some of what Sydney has to offer.

Sharing our New Zealand expertise

One of the highlights was Erin Gibson, our BAS Director, who gave a great presentation about the New Zealand tax system. She showed the international delegates a comprehensive overview of our tax administration, provisional tax regime, and GST framework, while also showcasing New Zealand’s unique culture and global rankings. The session was really well-received, and it was great to see Erin representing our expertise on the international stage.

Bhavin Sanghavi, our Audit Director, also delivered an interesting presentation on UHY Haines Norton’s audit methodology, our leadership in technical standards, and our experience across not-for-profit and for-profit entities. He also covered our commitment to quality assurance, international reporting standards, and peer review practices within the UHY network. The positive feedback about Bhavin’s deep expertise and engaging delivery reinforced our reputation for audit excellence.

Key conference themes

The conference centred on how AI and technology are reshaping accounting, with the UHY network determined to stay ahead of the curve in uncertain times. Discussions on wellbeing, sustainable performance and accountability throughout the network showed where the profession is moving, not just where it stands today.

Beyond the boardroom

But it wasn’t all work!

Beyond the business agenda, the conference offered some fantastic evening events that showcased Sydney and gave us all the chance to network with our international colleagues. The opening event featured a barbecue dinner at Martinez, Quay Quarter Tower. It was the perfect opportunity to catch up with everyone in a relaxed setting, reinforcing the collaborative spirit of the UHY network.

Another evening, we boarded the Captain Cook III at Circular Quay for a Sydney Harbour dinner cruise. The evening started with drinks and canapés, followed by a three-course dinner with panoramic views of the city’s skyline and landmarks. The cruise was a highlight for many of us, offering a relaxed and elegant setting to connect with colleagues from around the world.

The final evening culminated in a gala dinner at the Sydney Opera House. We were treated to a guided tour of this iconic venue, followed by a formal dinner that celebrated the spirit of the UHY network. The event combined cultural immersion with professional camaraderie and left us with lasting memories of Sydney’s grandeur and hospitality.

What we brought home

Our presence at the conference underscored our commitment to global engagement, professional development, and the values that define the UHY brand. We’ve returned to New Zealand with renewed energy, fresh perspectives, and international best practices that we’re already applying to deliver exceptional service to our clients.

It’s energising to be part of a global network that’s committed to excellence, innovation, and supporting each other’s growth. The connections we strengthened and the insights we gained will benefit our clients and our team for years to come.
